Kindergarten
Art
In art, kindergartners learn how to express ideas through drawing, painting and building. They explore color, shape and line while experimenting with different tools and materials. Students learn how artists share feelings and ideas through their work and practice talking about what they notice in their own and others’ art. They also begin learning how to care for art materials and work responsibly in a creative space.
English Language Arts
Kindergarten is a time for students to begin building foundational literacy skills. Through play in kindergarten, students learn all about the alphabet – the names and sounds of the letters and how they fit together to make words. Kindergarten students spend time listening to stories and begin to read them on their own. Kindergartners ask and answer questions about true and make-believe stories, poems and articles. They use drawing, speaking and writing to express themselves, and they learn important communication skills while interacting with their teachers and peers.
Math
In math, kindergartners learn to read, write and represent numbers from zero to 31. They also count, compare and order numbers of items up to 20, as well as add and subtract numbers from zero to 10. Kindergartners even begin learning algebra by looking at patterns and learn geometry by sorting and comparing two and three-dimensional objects.
Music
Kindergartners explore the joy of music through singing, movement and rhythm play. They learn to keep a steady beat, explore high and low sounds, and notice patterns that repeat in songs. Students use simple rhythm instruments, echo short melodies and move expressively to music. They begin to understand that music can tell a story and connect people together.
Physical Education
Kindergartners build confidence in movement by practicing hopping, skipping, balancing, throwing and catching. Lessons focus on learning body control, spatial awareness and simple rules for safe play. Students begin to understand that moving their bodies helps them grow stronger and feel healthy. They also learn cooperation through fun activities that promote teamwork and inclusion.
Science
Kindergarten students explore the natural world through hands-on investigations. They observe seasonal changes, track daily weather and learn how living things respond to their environments. Students experiment with objects to see how they move and what happens when forces push or pull them. They also learn about different materials in our world. In the spring, students compare animal needs and behaviors, building an early understanding of life cycles and habitats.
Social-Emotional Learning
Kindergartners learn to practice listening with their eyes, ears and hearts. They learn to follow directions, name their feelings and show kindness toward others. Lessons teach foundational skills like empathy, responsibility, and gratitude through songs, stories and games. Students begin to build classroom routines that support a caring and respectful learning community.
Social Studies
Kindergarten students begin the study of social studies in kindergarten by learning about their school community - Who are we? Why are we here? How do we all work together to build a great classroom community? Students explore the classroom and learn how cooperation, participation, respect and friendship create a strong learning environment. They also study and explore the differences between needs and wants, identify key characteristics of place, and compare family traditions within their classroom.
