BREADCRUMB

Grade 3

Art

Students in third grade deepen their artistic thinking by experimenting with perspective, pattern and balance. They use drawing, painting and mixed media to explore big ideas about identity, community and imagination. Students analyze how artists use design elements to communicate meaning and begin to connect art to their own experiences. They learn to give and receive feedback respectfully to grow as young artists.

English Language Arts

Third graders use their reading skills to learn more about many subjects. They read a wide range of genres and describe the characters in the stories and how the story teaches a lesson. They read informational materials (books, articles, online) to learn about history, science and social studies; using information from illustrations like maps and pictures as well as words. They use the Reading and Writing Companion to respond to reading and work on longer papers, such as research or opinion pieces. When writing stories, they include conversation and descriptions of the character’s actions, thoughts and feelings.

Math

Third grade is a big year in the world of learning math. Students not only work with numbers up to 100,000, but they also add and subtract multi-digit numbers, as well as begin to multiply and divide. Third grade is the start of fractions and functions. Students read, write, represent and compare fractions. They start to look at functions in terms of inputs and outputs. Geometry includes an introduction to polygons, parallel and perpendicular lines and perimeter. Students now measure with half units. Time and money continue. Students can tell time to the minute on both digital and analog clocks, as well as state elapsed time. Money includes making change up to one dollar. Parents can continue to help students with fluency in addition and subtraction.

Music

Third graders expand their understanding of rhythm, melody and harmony through singing, instrument playing and movement. They read and perform simple musical notation and begin composing short rhythmic or melodic phrases. Students listen to music from different cultures and historical periods to understand how it communicates ideas and emotions. Through group performances, they learn the value of teamwork and practice.

Physical Education

Students develop strength, coordination and control as they practice skipping, balancing, dribbling and jumping. They participate in cooperative games where teamwork and fair play are emphasized. Lessons encourage students to try new skills, set personal goals and celebrate effort. They also learn how staying active supports lifelong health and well-being.

Science

Third graders explore systems that connect the Earth, energy and life. They observe weather patterns, learn about the water cycle, and investigate how sunlight and temperature affect climate. They are introduced to ideas of force, speed and direction as students test how objects move. They explore living organisms, discovering how animals and plants have unique structures that help them survive and reproduce

Social-Emotional Learning

Students focus on perspective, taking and seeing a situation from another person’s point of view - and flexible thinking. They learn how to handle change, think creatively and solve problems in new ways. Lessons also help students practice expressing their feelings respectfully and asking for what they need. These skills help build empathy, resilience and strong relationships within their classroom community

Social Studies

Social studies opens the exciting exploration of ancient history in third grade! Students will examine historical records, compare and contrast different perspectives of history, and use maps to describe places around the world. They will also learn about the branches of government, understand the importance of respecting diverse perspectives and discover how different types of resources help provide goods and services.
